WHAT IS PILATES?
Stretch, Balance, Strengthen, Flex Pilates is a series of non-impact, non-aerobic, relaxing, gentle but effective exercises, stretches, and breathing techniques designed to strengthen abdominal, lower-back and pelvic muscles while improving flexibility and overall muscle tone.
Evolved from techniques created by Joseph Pilates more than 80 years ago, modern Pilates exercises create a body that is long and lean, with slender thighs, a flat stomach and a strong back. Professional dancers have used Pilates for decades. Top athletes use it to develop coordination and prevent injury. Hollywood celebrities and top models use Pilates to maintain beautiful form.
The workout is surprisingly relaxing and revitalizing, gentle enough for mothers-to-be, yet challenging enough for the super-fit. It's a program that works for everyone, regardless of age or fitness level, a pilates program enables your body to be evenly conditioned, helping you meet lifestyle goals with more energy and less chance of injury. Done properly and consistently, Pilates training will help you give yourself several life-enhancing benefits. Among them are:
Improved overall fitness and conditioning
Improved posture
Taller, thinner profile
Increased energy
Increased range-of-motion
Reduced stress
Conscious relaxation
Reduced joint and muscle pain
Therapeutic for osteoporosis, arthritis, fibromyalgia
Injury rehabilitation
Pilates training combined with efficient aerobic activity such as dancing, walking, jogging, cycling, swimming or skating results in a complete program of muscular and cardio-vascular fitness. We encourage students to take class at least twice a week in order to maximize the benefits of Pilates.
ADULT CLASS DESCRIPTIONS (note - not all classes are offered year round)
All Levels Pilates – Includes Pilates exercises designed to strengthen abdominal, lower back and pelvic floor muscles as well as increase flexibility and range of motion, align your body and energize. Exercises are appropriate for the intermediate and advanced Pilates students. Students are monitored for necessary modification (easier) or progression (harder) to any exercise. This is a fast-paced workout which combines the benefits of cardio and mat work all in one.
Intro Mat – This class is an introduction to Pilates designed for those who have no experience with Pilates. It introduces students to the basic elements of Pilates with a concentration on correct placement and execution. Classes are small allowing for individual attention and hands-on correction. Particular attention is placed on giving each student modifications and variations on each exercise to allow him/her to get the benefit of the work without the risk of injury.
Therapeutic Mat – Therapeutic Mat is a moderately paced mat class for the beginning/intermediate student who is capable of a harder workout, but needs the class tailored to work around issues such as arthritis or injuries. Once again attention is placed on giving each student the modification and variations of exercises allowing maximum work while reducing the risk of injury.
Beginning Adult Ballet – This class is an introduction or reintroduction for the adult with interest in ballet. Proper body position and core strength are stressed.
